How painful is Invisalign???

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a clear set of plastic aligners that replaces the brackets and traditional braces. Invisalign does the work of traditional braces in less time, and without much discomfot. A certain amount of discomfort is common with any sort of orthodontic treatment, and Invisalign is no exception Here is everything you need to know about Invisalign, the pain level, and how to alleviate any pain you might feel during your treatment

One of the most common questions normally all patients ask in our practice, is this dental treatment is painful?? When it comes to alignment of teeth, people has previous painful experiences of metal braces and they do not want same to happen with their kids. Because of recent advancement in dentistry, we have started giving one more option of Invisalign treatments. We have discussed about its treatment part in previous blog. In this article we will discuss about how painful is Invisalign.

Those who are familiar with traditional metal braces know that the pain of braces is not too intense, a mild discomfort is always there. Specially a few days after every visit. Invisalign is often advertised as being pain-less and less painful than metal braces.

But that doesn’t mean that Invisalign doesn’t hurt. Moving teeth and straightening will definitely leads to some discomfort.

It is less painful than traditional metal braces, but the pain fades after the teeth adjust in its new position. Once you switch to the next set of aligner, it persist for few days.

With traditional metal braces, some discomfort that you feels comes from the brackets rubbing against the soft tissue of the mouth and from the placement of the wire. Especially during the first few weeks of treatment, before the mouth gets used to, the scratching of the metal components against your mouth can be very uncomfortable. But in case of invisalign there is no such metal component. But sometimes the edges of the aligners can be irritating to your gums and the insides of your lips as your mouth gets used to wearing them.

The purpose of Invisalign is to shift your teeth into a straighter and healthier position, hence the aligners have to put pressure on the teeth. Putting pressure on the teeth means some discomfort and pain. This can be pronounced during the first few days after putting in a fresh set of aligners, but it eventually goes away.

Ways to handle Invisalign pain.

For some people who are experiencing pain in relation to the sharpness or roughness of the aligner’s edges, that can removed simply by bringing your aligners to your dentist to smoothen it.
Sometimes your dentist prescribes painkillers also but that should be taken only with prescription of dentist only because sometimes these medicines hamper your teeth movement also hence treatment gets delayed.
Sometimes when pain and discomfort is more, cold compress with ice cubes outside cheeks is very effective.

To prevent some of discomfort when you get new aligners, try switching out your old aligner for the new one just before bedtime. This will allow you to sleep in those initial few hours with the new aligner and you do not have to deal with the pain during day time.

During initial few days of new set aligners, try to avoid crispy, crunchy, and chewy foods. Try to eat softer foods that involve less chewing and are easier to eat. This will help in relieving discomfort.

If your aligners are giving too much of pain, you should contact your dentist immediately.
